WASHINGTON (WUSA) - DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Pete Piringer said a sport utility vehicle traveling southbound along Anacostia Ave, in Anacostia Park, about 2 p.m. Thursday, left the road, went down an embankment and into the Anacostia River.
The incident was witnessed by a Metropolitan Police officer, Piringer said, and two construction workers. The construction workers had access to a boat and used that to get to the sinking vehicle.
Piringer said the DC Fire boat and DC Police Harbor Patrol also converged on the sinking vehicle, but the construction workers were first to arrive.
The workers used an oar to break out a window in the sinking truck and that enabled the woman to escape, Piringer said.
