Help Make The Holidays Warmer: Donate to The Lydia's House Coat Drive

Lydia's House, the D.C. based non-profit that is "dedicated to growing children, strengthening families and changing neighborhoods" is running a winter clothing drive and needs your help!

The charity, which is the only housing counseling agency in Ward 8, is asking locals to bring gently used coats and jackets to their building located at 3939 South Capitol Street in Southwest.

The coat drive was founded by Eugene and Patrice Shepard, the founders of Lydia’s House, and will run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. today, and then will be closed from Friday, December 24th-January 2nd for the holidays.  The drive will then re-open on January 3rd and stay open until the end of March.

“It means a lot to the community,” Ronald Childs, Deputy Director of Lydia’s House said.  “With these really difficult economic times, and now that we’re in the holiday season with the drop in temperature, most of our clients can’t afford coats.  We noticed people were walking around in sweatshirts.  We started the coat drive to help offset the costs that goes with buying a new coat.”

The donated coats and jackets will go to people throughout the D.C. area who don’t have the means to buy their own.

“If they need a coat and we have one in their size, they can get it,” Childs said.  “Most of our clients have been single mothers with children.  If people have kids coats that have been lying in their closet because they have been outgrown, that’s perfect.”
