Annual Poetry Slam Showcases DC SCORES Student-Athletes

Last night, November 30, DC SCORES held the first part of their annual Poetry Slam at the Columbia Heights Education Campus.

Student athletes from 14 DC SCORES elementary and middle schools took to the stage and put on quite a show.

Each elementary school performed two original group poems and one original individual poem, while teams from the participating middle schools performed one, two, or three songs that grew out of their original poetry.

In the elementary school group, Bancroft took 3rd place, H.D. Cooke took 2nd place, and Perry Street Prep claimed the top prize.  Shaw won first place for the middle schools, and Lincoln was awarded second.

Read a full recap on the night that was on DCSCORE blog.

RIFE 2011 - DC/MD/VA Film Showcase

RIFE 2011 - DC/MD/VA Film Showcase

Today in my continuing preview of this weekend's REEL Independent Film Extravaganza, I'm going to stick close to home with the DMV (District, Maryland, and Virginia) showcase. Of the over thirty films in the festival, nearly half are produced by local filmmakers.

If you missed its AFI premiere, that I wrote about here on WUSA, you can check out Jason Baustin's Gone Forever (trailer). This 23 minute film tells the story of a young widower who struggles to find peace following the death of his wife. Gone Forever screens Saturday in the 4PM block.

RIFE 2011 - Films with Girl Power

RIFE 2011 - Films with Girl Power

All this week, I have been previewing films for this weekend's REEL Independent Film Extravaganza in Washington D.C. Today I'll be sharing films that center around women.

Saturday's 12PM opening film, Butterfly Crush, comes to RIFE all the way from Australia and New Zealand. Butterfly Crush is an up-and-coming female song and dance duo poised for success. But when one half of the duo gets involved with a cult, everything threatens to come unraveled. Director Alan Clay will be in attendance from New Zealand.

Also at 12PM on Saturday is American University graduate student Lawrence Dortch's One Punch at a Time. This nine minute short documentary follows Asia Stevenson, an 18 year old Washingtonian hoping to qualify for the first ever U.S. Women's Olympic Boxing team and compete in the 2012 Olympics.
