Teenagers Sentenced to 40-Year Prison Terms For Murder, Other Charges

Aaron Andrews, 19, and Curtis Weeks, 18, were each sentenced today to 40 years in prison for killing one man and wounding another in an incident that took place in September 2009 in Southeast Washington, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced. The murder victim was slain while coming to the aid of his friend during an attempted robbery.

Arrest Made in the Homicide of Tyrell Fogle

 

 Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Detectives announced that an arrest has been made in the fatal shooting of a man that occurred in the 1900 block of Bennett Place, NE.

One of Mayor Vincent C. Gray’s top priorities for his administration is safe communities. A key initiative in support of this priority has been the Metropolitan Police Department’s Operation Summer Ice.

During this targeted initiative, MPD has focused attention on the highest risk repeat violent offenders in neighborhoods with high levels of violence in order to intervene in conflicts and deter future violence. The Department has also worked with partner agencies to provide services to juveniles in these high-risk neighborhoods to provide productive activities now and build constructive relationships for the future.

During the three-month-long initiative, homicides decreased 71 percent in the target areas. Robbery and assaults with a dangerous weapon each declined 20 percent in the target areas.

Two Men Sentenced to Prison Terms For 2009 Attack Against Two Special Police Officers in Southeast

WASHINGTON - Eric Brown, 20, and Markell Howard, 21, both of Washington, D.C. have been sentenced to prison terms on charges stemming from a November 2009 attack against two special police officers, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced. One of the officers was shot in the arm and the other managed to avoid the gunfire.

 

Report Says Teenage Crime Way Up In D.C.; Lack Of Youth Programs To Blame?

A few days ago, Scott McCabe of the Washington Examiner published an article reporting that teenage crimes in D.C. are way up thus far this year

"The number of children under 18 arrested and charged with violent crimes -- homicide, rape and aggravated assault -- has risen 10 percent this year compared with last year,"  McCabe wrote.  "Burglary arrests of juveniles jumped 90 percent, while thefts shot up 173 percent."
