Today, DC Council Chair Kwame Brown released the following statement after Mayor Vincent C. Gray released his fiscal year 2013 budget proposal:

“This morning, the Mayor presented his budget proposal for fiscal year 2013 to the Council.  Over the coming weeks, we will analyze his proposal carefully, program by program, to determine its impact on the residents and businesses of the District of Columbia.

My priorities for the District’s budget have not changed. We must continue to invest in education, economic development, and job growth, while ensuring that we pass a balanced budget that keeps the District on a responsible financial course.  Since I joined the Council, I have been an outspoken advocate for middle school modernization and parity in course offerings. I was pleased to see that Mayor Gray’s budget proposal includes an acceleration of investment in the construction of middle schools particularly, two in Ward 5, Johnson Middle School in Ward 8, and Stuart Hobson Middle School in Ward 6.

My colleagues and I will review each expenditure and program to ensure that our residents receive the most efficient services possible by addressing duplicative or wasteful programs.  I remain committed to a balanced and fiscally responsible budget that meets the needs of those that need it the most. I look forward to working with the Mayor and my colleagues on the Council to address this very important issue.”
