Alexandria Seaport Foundation receives $50K grant at Economic Club event with guest Warren Buffett

Buffett and David Rubenstein, The Economic Club of Washington, DC's President, are among business leaders at 25th anniversary celebration on June 5th where 10 community organizations, including the Alexandria Seaport Foundation, received a total of $500,000 in grants

The Alexandria Seaport Foundation (ASF), which offers disadvantaged youth and young adults a paid, work-based apprentice program in boat building that prepares participants for careers in the building trades, received a $50,000 grant from The Economic Club of Washington, D.C. at its 25th anniversary on June 5th at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park.

We love our incredible growing team of life-saving foster volunteers!

Marion Barry: "Whatever The President Wants Is What We Ought To Do"

Speaking to the Daily Caller at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Anacostia Health Center on Monday, D.C. Councilman and former Mayor Marion Barry reportedly said that when it comes to another potential stimulus package, "Whatever the President wants is what we ought to do."

The Health Center was paid in part with money from the 2009 Recovery Act.

Barry continued by reportedly saying, "We need more stimulus, so if the President wants more, he ought to get more."

Gray and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Assistant Secretary Mercedes Márquez announced a collaborative partnership that will provide technical assistance to D.C. government agencies as they implement an improvement plan for grant administration. The plan results from an assessment that HUD conducted of the District’s granting programs.

Gray joined leaders from the government, private, philanthropic and non-profit sectors today in unveiling Raise DC, the District’s comprehensive new cradle-to-career initiative. The effort, which lays out a set of measurable outcomes and targets to ensure that all District youth are career-ready by age 24, joins a national movement of cities working to bring together a cross-sector group of leaders organized around a set of common goals and committed to using data to drive improvements.

Today, DC Council Chair Kwame Brown released the following statement after Mayor Vincent C. Gray released his fiscal year 2013 budget proposal:

“This morning, the Mayor presented his budget proposal for fiscal year 2013 to the Council.  Over the coming weeks, we will analyze his proposal carefully, program by program, to determine its impact on the residents and businesses of the District of Columbia.
