Running with the PACK

The rain and drizzle did not put a damper on the spirits of more than twenty Department of Labor (DOL) employees who, on Tuesday, November 16, participated in their second P.A.C.K. (People & Animals Cardio Klub) walk/run around the Nation's Capitol.  As part of the Obama administration’s "Feds Get Fit" program, the DOL employees spent their lunch hour on a PACK walk with WHS dogs available for adoption.  It was  a refreshing two mile trek near the National Mall.

Capitol Hill, DC---This Sunday, November 21, the DC Rollergirls will roll back into the DC Armory for the second bout of their fifth season.

The DC Rollergirls are cooking up a roller derby brawl at the DC Armory with a pre-Thanksgiving bout that is sure to satisfy your appetite for action.

On November 21, the Cherry Blossom Bombshells take on Scare Force One in a sizzling battle for holiday bragging rights. Doors open at 3 p.m. and the action begins at 4 p.m..

The afternoon begins with an exhibition bout featuring the defending champion DC DemonCats against the DC All-Stars. The halftime performance of the main bout is the Anacostia Rollers, a popular “Show on Skates” with D.C.-based entertainers.

Tickets are $12 for ages 12 and up, $6 for children 6-11 and free for kids 5 and under. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster or at the door on bout day. Individuals with a valid military ID can purchase tickets for $10 at the door.

12th Annual Heart to Hart Tennis Clinic

The 12th Annual Heart to Hart Tennis Experience will take place on November 6.  The event will be held from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the SE Tennis and Learning Center at 701 Mississippi Avenue in Southeast. 

The Recreation Wish List Committee, in partnership with DC DPR, will present a day of tennis clinics, celebrity matches and a silent auction for the public. For more information, call SETLC at (202) 678-7530.

DC Pro Sports Teams Join Forces With Coca-Cola to Battle Childhood Obesity

The Coca-Cola Company, Washington Capitals, Washington Mystics, Washington Nationals, Washington Redskins and Washington Wizards joined forces at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, September 28 to announce a unique partnership aimed at educating local area youth about the importance of physical activity and a balanced diet. The collective influence of these high profile partners is expected to amplify the need to educate and engage area youth about eating right and keeping fit. These are shared goals for Washington’s professional sports teams and Coca-Cola, giving youth an exciting opportunity to connect with local icons and teaching them how to “play like pros and eat like pros.”  The D.C.-area alliance, which is an extension of Coca-Cola’s numerous Live Positively programs, will serve as a pilot program for future partnerships between Coca-Cola and professional sports teams throughout the country.

Celebrity Chef Rick Moonen to Feature Gourmet Dog During Nationals Final Home Stand of Season

Well, the Nationals certainly aren't in playoff contention, but there are still reasons to visit the ballpark before the season ends.  One in particular will be the presence of a brand new gourmet concession option from Celebrity Chef Rick Moonen. 

Moonen is the chef and owner of Rick Moonen’s rm seafood in Las Vegas.  Moonen has become a public figure since appearing as a contestant on Top Chef Masters in 2009, as well as a guest judge on Top Chef DC.

At the home stand, which will run from September 27 to September 29 and will feature the Nationals playing against the Philadelphia Phillies, Moonen will unveil the Moon ‘N Doggie, an all natural shrimp dog with Asian slaw and toga chips.

The Moon 'N Doggie is served on a toasted roll, and Moonen will offer creative sauces including Chipotle Dude, Horseradish Hell and Honey Ginger Goo. 

This Weekend WalkingTown DC and BikingTown DC Offering Tours All Over the City

Cultural Tourism DC celebrates the history and heritage of Washington, DC with the Fall Edition of WalkingTown DC and BikingTown DC on Saturday and Sunday, September 25 and 26. This two-day event of DC features guided tours in all eight wards of the city. Healthy for both body and mind, this weekend of more than 100 free walking and biking tours allows visitors and residents to explore both new and familiar places throughout the city.
